On January 26th…
Over at BBQ Films, we’re huge fans of Prohibition-era gangster movies hailing from the madness that was the ‘20s and ‘30s in America. What’s more, we just found out that our friends over at Google Places (the new personalized local recommendation engine powered by the reviews of users and their friends) share our love for speakeasies, 30′s Chrysler speedsters, and the rat-tat-tat of tommy guns on screen. So we’re teaming up to bring you that familiar story from the twilight years of Prohibition: the detention of the infamous Al Capone by Elliott Ness with — you guessed it — The Untouchables…
And what better place to take in this movie than a former speakeasy? That’s why we’re headed to Theatre 80 to watch Sean Connery’s Jimmy Malone. This little theater used to be a much more clandestine place to hang out in the ‘20s, and we’ll get a chance to enjoy complimentary drinks before and after at their original bar. To bring the history of the space alive, we’ll also show a short clip from Sergio Leone’s Jewish American Mobster classic Once Upon a Time in America, and serve food from local Russ & Daughters, which started offering its fine fare in the same era. We’ve also got special treats in store, including stories about Ness and a music video interlude at intermission that is sure to surprise. A few lucky guests will even get to tour the basement smuggling tunnels!
We will start with complimentary drinks, and food from Russ and Daughters at 7.30p, and the film will start shortly after 8p.
So, how do you sign up? Well, we’re doing this evening as a little competition. Google New York wants to give you the opportunity to win a pair of tickets to our movie night, just for sharing your opinions about your favorite places in New York City.
Here’s how it works:
- Go to Google.com/Places and select “Start Rating” (you’ll need to create a Google account if you haven’t already).

- Review as many New York City places (especially your favorite Italian restaurants, under-the-radar spots and speakeasies!) as you like by 11:59 pm on Tuesday, January 24th. Each quality review you write will be judged as a new entry.

Its too complicated and time consuming for some…
Tried it out and it wasn’t so bad. In fact I really enjoyed sharing some of my fav spots around town.
Hey it’s way worth it for a night with BBQ Films !!!
Donna, Craig, Jennifer – thanks for your feedback! We’ll work on making it simpler in the future, and good luck on this week’s contest.
Regardless of the contest, what time does the event begin? I can’t seem to find that info. Is participation in the contest mandatory to attend?
We are starting with drinks and food at 7.30p, movie a little after 8p!
And yes, please enter the contest to attend…
